Mario Rodriguez almost grew up with pit bulls. He had beautiful memories with his pit bull dog, King. When the dog died in 2018, he was devastated. He felt that a part of his soul was lost with his pet’s demise. In the memory of King, he promised that he would help and save pit bulls.
While on the road to make a delivery one day in August of 2018, his wife texted him about a pit bull up for adoption. But the animal shelter is located in New York, 2,800 miles away from his location.
He searched for the photos of the dog posted on the shelter’s web site. The pit bull’s name is Hickory. He fell in love with Hickory the moment he saw his pictures and Rodriguez automatically decided that he wants to adopt him. He also learned from the site that Hickory is on the kill list of the shelter.
Rodriguez asked his employer if he could pass by New York to get the dog. Thankfully, there is a delivery route that will go through New York but he needs to drive cross-country for 2,800 miles. He called the animal shelter to wait for him and not to euthanize Hickory.
It was a six-day road journey, but he did not mind as he was excited to see Hickory. He called the shelter every day ensuring that the pit bull was still alive. When he arrived, at the shelter in Brooklyn, Hickory was waiting for him. Upon seeing him, Hickory literally jumped from his kennel to the arms of Rodriguez. It was love at first sight for both of them.
It was amazing to see how easily they bonded. I was an instant connection between him and the dog. After filling out the adoption papers, Hickory was already on the road with Rodriguez. Upon arriving home, Hickory got to know his new family and his two other pit bull brothers, Angel and Cooper. He got along well with the family.
The family decided that Hickory will be a good co-pilot on the road. Since then, he has been traveling for almost 6-months with Rodriguez and proved to be a good and reliable companion on the road.
