A stray dog in Nairobi, Kenya saved a newborn baby who was ruthlessly left in the middle of the Kenyan forest. The dog carried her along public streets and under a barbed-wire fence to a shack where the residents later found her cuddling with a litter of pups.
According to Aggrey Mwalimu, the shed’s owner, the dog snatched up the newborn, wrapped in a dirty sack, and placed her behind the wooden shed where the dog’s puppies were.
Resident Mary Adhiambo said that her two children heard a baby crying nearby. They started looking around and eventually found a baby in a shed with a litter of pups. She clothed the infant after washing her and cleaning the umbilical cord with rubbing alcohol.
After bringing her to the local police station, the people then carried her to Kenyatta National Hospital. According to Hannah Gakuo, a spokesperson for Kenyatta National Hospital, the newborn baby, who weighed 7 pounds and 4 ounces, was stable and reacted well to therapy. Hannah also stated that the infant arrived at their hospital with an infected umbilical cord, and the doctors suspected that she might’ve been left for two days before the dog discovered her in the woods.
The medical staff named the newborn baby Angel. They reported that the infant was unusually quiet all day and that many people came to see the baby after hearing about it on the news. Abandoning newborn babies is widespread in Kenya, and the majority of parents who leave their newborns somewhere go undetected.
Hannah estimates that about two newborns are brought to the capital’s main public hospital each month by residents. And because Kenyatta National Facility is a public hospital, she said, most abandoned infants are generally brought there. Angel is now safe and sound, all thanks to the clever dog who found and rescued her.
